Designed to enhance compliance with driving hours regulations, European transport competition conditions and road safety, the digital tachograph records the activities of regulated vehicles and drivers.
How ?
It is a secure recording device, on board the vehicle. Consisting of a sensor in the gearbox connected by a cable to the tachograph in the cab, the tachograph is calibrated to match the vehicle. The recordings made can be used via a special application.
Who for ?
The tachograph system involves interaction between several parties with concrete benefits for each of them :
The driver puts his smart card into the tachograph, which records his activities. This ensures reliably records of his working and rest times on a medium “shared" with his employer. He also has on-board warnings helping him to comply with the working hours regulations, avoid overspeeding, etc.. The tachograph contributes to the safety of everyone on the road.
Transporters regularly download vehicle and driver data, and make it available in the event of an inspection. The tachograph contributes to fairer competition in national and international transport. Data is stored in electronic format (reliable and durable), and can be used to improve management of the company’s resources (vehicles and drivers).
Only approved centres are allowed to calibrate and periodically inspect tachographs. They log data from the tachograph and maintenance work that they have done on it. The digital tachograph calls for new technical qualifications. It contributes to creating added value services which generate loyalty in transporters’ customers.
The authorities check tachographs and records, at transporters, approved centres and in vehicles by roadside inspections. They have complete records that cannot be falsified, in a format standardized for all countries and for effective checking.
